HISTORY
The first historical account about the Springs dates back to 400 B.C. and proves that it was already known by the Romans. They dedicated the springs to Venus, marking the connection between the goddess and the vital element of water. Today, a sculpture stands among the water streams to witness this peculiar symbolism.
The first written evidence about the Springs dates back to 50 A.D. In his De Re Rustica, Lucius Junius Moderatus Columella, a Roman writer living at the time of Seneca, celebrated the water of Guarcino, the place where Roman legions stopped to heal the wounds they had suffered during their campaign in the East. «Est in Guarceno Campaniae fluens aqua montibus oriunda, salubritati corporis accomodatissima» (in Guarcino, Campania, there is a kind of water gushing from the nearby mountains which is highly recommended for the health of the body).
Bottled and distributed since 1894, Acqua Filette was awarded in that same year at an international exhibition on Medicine in Rome. In 1933 it was awarded at the Tripoli International Fair. Acqua Filette soon became famous as a healthy and curative water.
TERRITORY
The origin of the Old Town of Guarcino is medieval. In ancient times it was inhabited by the Italic tribe of the Hernici. The ruins of an aqueduct and some remains of baths, inscriptions, along with some temple foundations prove the presence of an ancient roman settlement. Since then and through the Middle Ages, Guarcino delivered water to all the surrounding towns. Throughout the centuries, Guarcino Springs have made a number of different activities possible: paper factories, mills and, more recently, water bottling and hydroelectric industry.
